About us

Headway House Salford & Trafford is a voluntary day centre where those who have suffered a severe traumatic brain injury can meet with others who have experienced similar problems in a friendly environment where social and recreational activities are available and organised by experienced Headway House group members and professional volunteers.

Who can join us?

Headway House is intended primarily for brain injury survivors, carers and families who are residents of Salford and Trafford. However where our resources allow, Headway House will also be available to those resident outside Salford and Trafford.

A daily charge of £35.00 is levied for attendance. We anticipate that most survivors will qualify for support from Social Services and so both the daily charge and the cost of travelling will be paid by them. In some cases, funding might be through the survivor's Primary Care Trust.

We will discuss funding with you at the outset and if you want, will help you apply for funding from Social Services/PCT.

We know that the demand for Headway House is likely to be substantial: the best current estimate is that within the Greater Manchester area, there are at least 4,000 survivors of a severe brain injury. In addition, each year, at least 3,500 individuals suffer a severe traumatic brain injury and will attend Accident and Emergency Departments in Greater Manchester.

When you first come to our Headway House, we will assess you and decide if we are able to offer you a place. This assessment may be carried out over more than one session and usually involves discussion with others such as the survivor's partner or family.

Please note, it will be harder to offer you a place if:

  • You are not medically stable.
  • You have a need for 1-1 care at all times and would only be able to attend Headway House unaccompanied.
  • We consider that your behaviour might put others at risk.
  • At the moment we do not have translators and so you need to be able to understand and communicate in English.
